Questions to ask a water damage company before work starts

A good company answers these without fuss, and the answers make two estimates easy to compare.

In this note

  1. How will you know where the water went?
  2. What will you remove, and why?
  3. Will I get the readings in writing?
  4. How do you work with my insurer?
  5. How do you decide it is dry?

How will you know where the water went?

Ask what meters they use and whether they record readings on a sketch of the house. Guessing leads to missed wet spots.

What will you remove, and why?

Clean water often dries in place. Ask them to explain anything they plan to cut out or throw away.

Water in your house right now?

Call and tell us what happened. We will tell you what to do while we are on the way.

Will I get the readings in writing?

Daily readings and photos protect you and help your claim. Ask for them at the end of the job.

How do you work with my insurer?

Ask what paperwork they provide and whether they need you to sign anything that hands over your claim. Read it before you sign.

How do you decide it is dry?

The answer should be readings compared with a dry part of the house, not a set number of days.
